Movies help us get into seasonal moods; whether that is getting scared during Halloween, getting swept up in romances during Valentine’s Day, or feeling inspired during the end of year holiday season; the perfect film can enhance the season. With the calendar flipping to December and the holiday season ramping up, it’s time to keep those holiday spirits up with some classic holiday film screenings. Here are five local theaters that will help you and your family stay in the holiday spirit all December long!
The Redford Theatre
The classic Redford Theatre is always showing classics throughout the year, and this December is no different. Starting on Saturday, December 1 they will show the likes of “Miracle on 34th Street,” “Scrooged,” “The Santa Clause,” “Home Alone,” and “It’s A Wonderful Life.” Be sure to check out their calendar to see the exact schedule.
The Michigan Theater
You will have two opportunities to see a version of the Nutcracker; the first taking place on Saturday, December 15 hosted by the Academy of Russian Classical Ballet and the Michigan Classical Ballet, and the second being a screening of the Bolshoi Theater production of The Nutcracker. Whether you want to see The Nutcracker in person or experience it on the big screen, The Michigan Theater has you covered.
The Main Art Theatre
The Main Art Theater in downtown Royal Oak shows the latest indie hits along with fan favorite cult classics. If you’re in the mood for a comedic holiday film, check out “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” on Friday, December 14 and Saturday, December 15. If action is a little more your taste, they will be showing “Die Hard” on Friday, December 21 and Saturday, December 22. All of the screenings will take place at midnight and you can find more information on the Main Art Theatre’s website.
The Senate Theater
While many of the films listed are considered holiday classics, The Senate Theater in Detroit is going a little less mainstream with their holiday film series. This year they will show “The Bells of St. Mary’s” on Saturday, December 8 and “Christmas in Connecticut” on Saturday, December 22. The Penn Theatre
The Penn Theatre in Plymouth shows second run movies for a low price, and that continues with their holiday classics series. This weekend starts with “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “Scrooged,” “Miracle on 34th Street,” “Elf,” “The Man Who Invented Christmas,” and “The Polar Express” showing on the following weekends. All showings are $3 and are cash only.
